AUGUST 2011

WE SHALL SOON BE SAYING ‘ADIEU’ TO SUMMER 2011:

The hot summer months will soon be over….We are hoping that each and everyone of you have had the merited rest and or holdiay abroad…or perhaps accross the channel waters in the sister island of Gozo. People need a rest from the daily routine that sometimes becomes monotonous and tiring. Now that the hot summer days will soon become history, we shall start bracing ourselves for more work that has to be completed by the end of the current year. Everyone within council of administration of A.L.P.S. works untiringly to make your membership in our association always better and more challenging. Before we broke off for the summer holidays we have enjoyed one of the finest Barbeque dinners at The Radisson Golden Sands. Speaking for all those who have attended, one may confidently say that this was a great success that has pleased members and their guests in no small way. The atmosphere by the waters edge as well as the sweet music throughout the evening have kept everyone so very happy. Many happy faces have left the venue carrying attractive hampers that they had won from raffle prizes specially prepared for the occasion. We feel that the chosen spot this year was ideal for everyone to unwind and relax and to wish each other a happy summer holiday. Pencil your diaries with the Christmas dinner date for Saturday 3rd December 2011. More details at a later stage.

The month of October will soon be with us and of course the annual Reunion that we are organising each year for all the Liceo Past Students from different ages. God Willing, we shall meet again on 22nd October 2011 to celebrate together a 50th anniversary.(1961-2011).

At the back of this newsletter, you will find an application form that has to be completed and returned at the very earliest so that we may plan and organise the catering, according to the number of participants. We are hoping to see as many of you as possible this year, to make this annual event another success.

THE COLLEAGUES OF OLD. CORNER ON A.L.P.S. WEB-SITE

Little by little the appeals that we made in earlier issues of this Newsletter, seem to have attracted the attention of a good number of Ex-Liceo students from Malta and from Overseas. Browsing through the web-site and exploring what A.L.P.S. has to offer, we are receiving some very positive feedback. As a matter of fact this section is updated with some of the latest material received. We need much more to make this section even more interesting to you all. Help us to maintain this section by sending in all your schooldays’ contributions with stories, photos, jokes, nicknames of teachers and class mates from different grades plus whatever you may deem important to be included and, which may bring back more and more memories of a past from our LICEO days. Our IT-Providers will be only too pleased to continue to build for us a most attractive web-site that makes all A.L.P.S. members happy to belong to a dynamic association….

MORE FUNCTIONS AT THE PWALES CHAPEL

The Festa of Sant Anna this year was celebrated with great pomp on the 9th July 2011. It has attracted a large congregation for Holy Mass and a reception that followed after the A.L.P.S. choir ended their repertoire. The chapel parvis at Pwales Valley came alive to the natural sounds coming from the fields close by. Of course, a word of thanks goes to all council members/wives and helpers who have yet again dedicated much of their summer leisure time for this special annual occasion. Without such dedication from a good number of people who were involved in this year’s festa event, we could not have achieved such a great success

For the coming months, kindly continue to keep note of the remaining events for this year at the Pwales Chapel:

15th October            Holy Mass at 18.00 hrs
12th November       Holy Mass at 16.30 hrs (remembrance mass)
13th December        Holy Mass at 11.00 hrs (carol singing included)

You certainly make the chapel come alive when you attend for the functions that we organise for you at Pwales. Come along and bring family and friends with you too.

A.L.P.S. LAPEL BADGES…

Lapel badges continue to be made available@ €2 each at every A.L.P.S. function, together with the distinctive Blazer Badges & ties. For the October reunion only, A.L.P.S. will this year donate a FREE lapel badge to each male participant. You may claim your badge at the venue.

A.L.P.S. appeal to 60 + “Dance to health awareness campaign”

The Association of Lyceum Past Students A.L.P.S. is proud to sport the ” Dance to Health ” campaign, as its latest feather in the cap of achievements. Over these last ten months lessons have been ably conducted by a professional tutor, at the Liceo every Saturday morning. Attendees have learnt Latin American and Ballroom to such lessons as Samba, CiaCia, Slow Waltz, Rumba and Quick Step. Lessons are structured to cater both as a revision to past lessons and also introducing new theoretical steps, rendering this mix a true professional and interesting approach throughout the whole session.

Following the success registered this year, ALPS, in its efforts to give a service to a wider participation of Members and Friends, is encouraging new couples to join. The number of satisfied attendees who attended so far, are eager to resume their lessons on the 1st October following the hot summer recess. Increasing the awareness to promote further this excellent body and mind therapy should be high on the list of priorities for our well-being. This offer is a balance of exercising and dancing.

This mix is the most enjoyable way of gettingthere, factoring-in the socialising element, of course, that comes quite natural. Attendees are interacting as one big family, looking forward and enjoying every new lesson that unfolds.
We encourage you to come forward and experience this state of well-being that benefits our physical as well as our psychological health. It is never too late to join ALPS dance lessons.
It is suggested that new participants come forward by the end of August, to plan with our professional teacher, induction exercises in preparation for the first lesson scheduled for Saturday 1st October 2011 at the Liceo Auditorium Hamrun.

PAYMENT OF YOUR A.L.P.S. MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTION

It is time to reveal that The Association of Lyceum Past Students, encounters financial difficulties to meet its commitments, when a good number of its members do not send in their annual subscription. This is our only source of income. Our cash flow depends on how many of you contribute to A.L.P.S. either with their annual subscription or by opting for a lifetime membership. To give one example, we have to mention one single project of restoration works to be done at The Pwales Chapel. We urgently need to raise a sum of approx €2000 to carry out the necessary works. Please assist us to meet the projected target of completing the restoration and repairs at the chapel before the winter months start. Kindly effect payment of all arrears and/or this year’s renewal subscription. Rates remain unchanged @ €12.00 per annum or for a life membership @ €70.00. Send your remittance to ALPS via Hon.Treasurer David Abela at: “Juniper”, Triq Ganni Vella, Tal-Qattus, Birkirkara BKR 13. david.r.abela@gmail.com If you need to enquire about outstanding subscriptions, you may communicate with Hon. Treasurer David Abela Tel: 9902 0845 / 2748 7693.
