M FOR MNARJA, MARVELLOUS
On Thursday 28th June, eve of the feast of Saints Peter and
Paul, the Association of Lyceum Past Students notched up another
success with the Mnarja BBQ organised on the terrace of the
Coastline Hotel, Salina Bay. The very encouraging number of
guests attending really enjoyed themselves to the very end,
chatting the night away between courses of the excellent buffet
dished up by the hotel. It was only when the hotel lights
started being gently dimmed, around midnight, that they realised
it was time to go home.
ALPS President George Stagno Navarra said it was truly another
event to remember with its very pleasant atmosphere. Special
thanks to Social Commission Chairman Alfred G. Formosa for
his good work and excellent coordination.
ST ANNE FEAST WITH SOME DIFFERENCES
The annual feast of St Anne at the Pwales Chapel was held
on 14th July, with the focal point being Mass celebrated by
ALPS Spiritual Director Fr William Bartolo OFM Conv. with
his usual well-delivered homily. This year the event was animated
by the San Gwann Choir under the direction of Raymond Storace.
Joe Fenech joined in to give an impressive solo rendition
of Panis Angelicum.
The event was well attended by members and friends of ALPS,
the Pwales community and a good number others, including two
families who asked Fr William to present their children to
St Anne. The word “babies” here is being studiously
avoided because one of the presentees was a teenager!
Another welcome feature this year was the donation of a magnificent
handmade lace soprapatena from the very capable hands of Mrs
Therèse Calleja, wife of ALPS Assistant Secretary-General
Charles Calleja who has always been his right hand in years
of loving care for the chapel.
It was certainly a very successful first feast under the
Pwales Chapel Commission chairmanship of Dr Nazareno Azzopardi,
but he would be the first to admit that it would not have
happened without the energetic and willing help of several
other Council members in the cleaning, decoration, making
and distribution of eats and drinks and other services –
and, of course, the post-event clean-up!
GRAND REUNION GETTING CLOSER
The date of the Grand Reunion 2007 has been changed to Friday
12th October in order to ensure the very welcome presence
of His Grace Archbishop Paul Cremona, who was a Lyceum schoolboy
from October 1956. His attendance has been secured through
the very good offices of his close friend, ALPS member Peter
Tortell.
As has already been intimated in ALPS News, it is the special
wish of Dar tal-Providenza Director Mgr Lawrence Gatt to meet
as many as possible of his former schoolmates who entered
The Lyceum with him in October 1947 (that’s all of 60
years ago!). Mgr Cremona, Mgr Gatt and ALPS Spiritual Director
Fr William Bartolo will concelebrate Mass at The Lyceum before
the Grand Reunion, starting at 7 p.m.
Besides former classmates of Mgr Cremona, the other group
of special guests will be all those past students who joined
or left The Lyceum in 1957, 50 years ago. But of course the
Grand Reunion is open to all Lyceum past students of any time,
irrespective of ALPS membership or otherwise, and their spouses.
This issue of ALPS News includes a registration form for
the Grand Reunion, which is indispensable for good planning
of the event. Please give special attention to the bottom
part, whereby you can help us to get in touch with more Lyceum
past students.
For more information please contact ALPS Membership Commission
Chairman Anthony Aquilina on 21 373706, 79373706 or alps@global.net.mt,
or Secretary-General Alex Borg (see masthead for details).
