{"id":5691,"date":"2015-01-28T14:55:29","date_gmt":"2015-01-28T14:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alps.asmlt.com\/?page_id=5691"},"modified":"2015-01-29T07:15:14","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T07:15:14","slug":"may-2004","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alpsmalta.com\/?page_id=5691","title":{"rendered":"MAY 2004"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DOUBLE RATION OF CULTURAL TOURS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Cultural Activities Commission of the Association is<br \/>\n                    laying on not one but TWO extremely interesting cultural tours<br \/>\n                    for June, making up in a way for the lack of one during May.<br \/>\n                    This was understandable to many in view of the several events<br \/>\n                    held to celebrate Malta\u2019s accession to the European<br \/>\n                    Union.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday 5th June ALPS members and their spouses, partners<br \/>\n                    and friends are invited to a tour of San Anton Palace and<br \/>\n                    Private Gardens at Attard, by courtesy of President Eddie<br \/>\n                    Fenech Adami. The meeting point will be outside the main gate<br \/>\n                    of the palace at 10.15 for 10.30 a.m. Needless to say, punctuality<br \/>\n                    is of the utmost importance. The tour will be led in English<br \/>\n                    by <em>guide extraordinaire<\/em> and ALPS member Brigadier<br \/>\n                    Claude Gaffiero.<\/p>\n<p>Following the tour, which itself is free of charge, a light<br \/>\n                    lunch is being organised at Saracino\u2019s Caf\u00e9 in<br \/>\n                    Church Square, Attard, just five minutes\u2019 walk from<br \/>\n                    San Anton Gardens. For just Lm3.50 per person participants<br \/>\n                    can enjoy Bruschetta, three choices of Pasta Buffet and a<br \/>\n                    Dessert. Drinks will be extra at participants\u2019 discretion.<\/p>\n<p>For obvious reasons bookings can only be accepted until Thursday<br \/>\n                    3rd June to Secretary-General Alex Borg on telephone\/fax 21<br \/>\n                    386812.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday 19th June the cultural tour will be to the highly-acclaimed<br \/>\n                    <em>CARAVAGGIO \u2013 Una Mostra Impossibile<\/em> at the<br \/>\n                    restored Caraffa Stores on the Cottonera Waterfront, near<br \/>\n                    the Casin\u00f2 di Venezia facing the new yacht marina.<br \/>\n                    The meeting point this time will be outside the Caraffa Stores<br \/>\n                    at 10.15 for 10.30 a.m., and our guide will be the very knowledgeable<br \/>\n                    Fr Marius Zerafa OP. <\/p>\n<p>The entrance fee will be a special Lm1.25 for ALPS, with<br \/>\n                    75c for <em>Kartanzjan<\/em> holders.<\/p>\n<p>After the tour, around 1 p.m., there will be an optional<br \/>\n                    light lunch at the Caraffa Stores Cafeteria, with Maltese<br \/>\n                    Platter and Dessert for Lm3.50 per person (drinks extra).\n                  <\/p>\n<p>Booking is open until Thursday 17th June, again with Alex<br \/>\n                    Borg. Cheques for both occasions are to be sent to him at<br \/>\n                    \u201cAlson\u201d, Naxxar Road, San Gwann SGN 08.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEEDS SPIRITUAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As already announced in the April issue of ALPS News, this<br \/>\n                    year\u2019s Day of Spiritual Retreat will be held at Manresa<br \/>\n                    House outside Victoria, Gozo, on Saturday 26th June and will<br \/>\n                    again be led by Mr John Formosa, Secretary-General of the<br \/>\n                    Society for Christian Doctrine (MUSEUM). <\/p>\n<p>The price for the full day, including breakfast, lunch and<br \/>\n                    dinner, will be Lm9 per person. The seminar starts at 9 a.m.,<br \/>\n                    so only early arrival will guarantee breakfast. There will<br \/>\n                    be Holy Mass in the evening before dinner.<\/p>\n<p>As attendees of previous occasions will know, space is very<br \/>\n                    limited, so all those wishing to participate please phone<br \/>\n                    Secretary-General Alex Borg on 21 386812 or e-mail on studiomoda@global.net.mt.<br \/>\n                    First come, first served.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>A GROWING WEBSITE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the relatively short time the ALPS website has been on<br \/>\n                    line we have already had quite a good number of hits. Some<br \/>\n                    members have also contacted old schoolmates overseas with<br \/>\n                    whom they are still in contact and told them about it. We<br \/>\n                    have had several constructive comments and suggestions from<br \/>\n                    both local and overseas sources. Indeed it has been our pleasure<br \/>\n                    to action some of those comments (the rest will be taken in<br \/>\n                    hand as soon as possible), and ALPS members who sent them<br \/>\n                    in will surely have been satisfied to see them implemented.<br \/>\n                    Unfortunately (or is it fortunately?) this is all voluntary<br \/>\n                    work, so everyone must exercise patience while the load is<br \/>\n                    slotted piecemeal into a very busy work schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The website is now in the early throes of mounting a Picture<br \/>\n                    Gallery, starting with the activities of this 10th anniversary<br \/>\n                    year. Any ALPS member who recognises himself in any picture<br \/>\n                    and would like to have a hard copy of it can e-mail ALPS News<br \/>\n                    Editor Laurence Vella on vellfam@vol.net.mt. In due course<br \/>\n                    we shall keep going back in time, not only with pictures of<br \/>\n                    past activities but also of Press cuttings etc.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, don\u2019t forget: it\u2019s <strong>www.ALPSmalta.com.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ST ANNE\u2019S CHAPEL REFURBISHED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Members, families and friends who visit St Anne\u2019s Chapel<br \/>\n                    at Pwales Valley for the celebration of St Anne\u2019s feast<br \/>\n                    on Saturday 17th July will be in for some very pleasant surprises.<br \/>\n                    The chapel has been repaved with flagstones by the Government\u2019s<br \/>\n                    Works Division, and Alex Borg\u2019s company Studiomoda of<br \/>\n                    San Gwann has generously donated an amount of pine wood to<br \/>\n                    be made into a brand-new pedestal for the statue of St Anne.<\/p>\n<p>The new works will be commemorated with the unveiling of<br \/>\n                    a plaque in the chapel as part of the celebration of St Anne\u2019s<br \/>\n                    feast, which as usual is being held in anticipation of its<br \/>\n                    liturgical date so as not to clash with the feast of Our Lady<br \/>\n                    of Sorrows at St Paul\u2019s Bay. Holy Mass will be animated<br \/>\n                    by the Choir of the University of the Third Age, who will<br \/>\n                    later entertain with a selection of lively, popular songs<br \/>\n                    under the baton of Maestro Joe Fenech.
