GRAND REUNION OF LYCEUM PAST STUDENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Association of Lyceum Past Students is now in top gear
\n in its huge efforts to organise a Grand Reunion of Lyceum
\n Past Students to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first
\n day of lessons in the present premises of The Lyceum at Hamrun.
\n With the active collaboration of the Head Master, Mr Godwin
\n Zammit, the Grand Reunion is to be held at the Main Hall of
\n The Lyceum itself on the evening of the anniversary – Saturday
\n 1st October 2005. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the idea first started out as a reunion for all
\n past students who went to the new Lyceum on 1st October 1955
\n (Form I or higher), it then developed into something for all
\n Lyceum past students of any age who would like to attend and
\n meet as many former schoolmates and teachers as possible.<\/p>\n

We already know that a number of past students living abroad
\n will be holidaying in Malta at that time, and have jumped
\n at the opportunity. The number of expressions of interest
\n is already very satisfactory, but since there are thousands
\n of Lyceum past students there could still be many more.<\/p>\n

Current membership of ALPS is not a prerequisite for attending
\n this Grand Reunion, although members have been instrumental
\n in getting the ALPS Council of Administration in touch with
\n several past students who are not currently members of the
\n Association.<\/p>\n

The ALPS secretariat is writing to all members and as many
\n other past students as possible, outlining the scope of the
\n event and enclosing an application form – invaluable for planning
\n purposes. The letter says that Lyceum Past Students will be
\n welcome to bring along their wives, girlfriends or partners
\n to the Grand Reunion. The ladies, too, will be happy to meet
\n former schoolmates or other acquaintances from the 1950s.<\/p>\n

Once the applications have been received, formal invitations
\n will be sent out in September 2005. The occasion will be taken
\n to launch this year\u2019s edition of The Chanticleer, the
\n ALPS magazine, which among other items will feature highlights
\n of ALPS\u2019s tenth anniversary celebrations and other more
\n recent events.<\/p>\n

Of course, if any number of Lyceum past students decide to
\n become members once they have seen the organisational acumen
\n of this most active of \u2018old boys\u2019 associations
\n in Malta, the Grand Reunion will have served another, very
\n welcome, purpose. <\/p>\n

Past students who would like to attend the Grand Reunion
\n may contact ALPS Secretary-General Alex Borg on telephone
\n 21 386812 or Council member Anthony Aquilina on 21 373706.
\n And the more names they give of former schoolmates (preferably
\n with addresses or telephone numbers or e-mail addresses) the
\n better. \u2026<\/p>\n

\n HELP!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the main item said that the occasion of the Grand
\n Reunion will be taken to launch this year\u2019s edition
\n of The Chanticleer, the plain truth is that the Council of
\n Administration would have liked to have issued it much earlier
\n this year. But it is also true, as ALPS News has pointed out
\n before, that we still need a certain amount of advertising
\n to break even.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the education received at The Lyceum over the years,
\n for which we are all grateful, most past students hold responsible
\n positions in private industry or are in business themselves
\n and can therefore make their own decisions. The Council of
\n Administration appeals to all Lyceum past students, irrespective
\n of membership of ALPS, to place advertising of their own businesses
\n or convince their employers to do so. Thank you all \u2026<\/p>\n

\n DAR GUIDO SALIBA<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the willing help of all Council members, each in his
\n own way, the new ALPS headquarters, Dar Guido Saliba, is steadily
\n settling down in its new role. The official opening of the
\n headquarters was given ample coverage in the local media.<\/p>\n

ALPS members or other Lyceum past students who could help,
\n individually or collectively, with a limited amount of office
\n furniture (suggestion: a computer and\/or a desktop to place
\n it on) will be welcomed with open arms. His or their donation
\n will be gratefully and publicly acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\n SUCCESS IN CAMPAIGN TO \u201cHELP AMANDA SMILE\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The organisational success achieved by the Association of
\n Lyceum Past Students and the Friends of the Manoel Theatre
\n in the barbecue to help raise funds for an operation in Canada
\n for young Amanda Attard has already been covered in the July
\n edition of ALPS News. But here comes news of the real success
\n – the financial aspect.<\/p>\n

The barbecue itself and the raffle of valuable prizes together
\n with the surrounding publicity campaign raised a total of
\n around Lm2,000. On receipt of the official news release Il-Gens
\n Illum helped by launching a campaign of its own for donations
\n from readers, with the management promising to top it up from
\n a special fund for such deserving causes. This latter
\n campaign is still open.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even with the willing support of Air Malta, which has promised
\n to carry Amanda and her parents free to London and any of
\n its other European gateways when the time for the operation
\n comes, the operation will still cost some Lm40,000. Before
\n ALPS and the Friends of the Manoel Theatre got involved the
\n child\u2019s parents had collected Lm25,000, which means
\n that the ultimate goal has not yet been reached. But the Association
\n of Lyceum Past Students is very proud to have given its share.<\/p>\n
