NEW STATIONERY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead of the usual masthead, the March 2007 hard-copy edition
\n of ALPS News reached readers on the new letterheads that the
\n Association commissioned from Bonavia Printers of Tign\u00e9,
\n Sliema, who also proudly sponsored the overprinting. The letterheads,
\n designed by Ramon Micallef of Box Design of Ta\u2019 Xbiex,
\n are part of a new set that also includes membership application
\n forms and envelopes overprinted with the ALPS logo and address.
\n It is sincerely hoped that Members and Friends of ALPS will
\n be proud of the modernised enhancement of the Association\u2019s
\n image.<\/p>\n


\n FOCUS ON LYCEUM BICYCLE MARATHON<\/strong><\/p>\n

It can safely be said that the fulcrum of ALPS activities
\n over the past several weeks has been the upcoming Lyceum Bicycle
\n Marathon 2007 \u2013 not just in the organisation of public
\n activities but also, and much more so, in the Council members\u2019
\n discussions and almost-frenetic e-mailing and telephoning.
\n The end \u2013 helping the Marathon Organising Committee
\n to enhance the amount of funds to be eventually turned over
\n to the Dar tal-Providenza of Siggiewi \u2013 justifies all
\n the effort.<\/p>\n

Following the highly-successful Cabaret Dinner at the Paradise
\n Bay Resort Hotel at Cirkewwa in January that has already been
\n adequately reported in the February issue of ALPS News, the
\n Council of Administration organised another very successful
\n dinner at the Topaz Aparthotel in Bugibba, which also featured
\n patrons spending not one night but two at the hotel because
\n the dinner was on a Friday. As in the previous event, all
\n proceeds from the dinner \u2013 as well as the very high-yielding
\n raffles \u2013 will go to the Marathon Fund. Add to that
\n the very good sales of tickets for the lottery organised by
\n The Lyceum, and you have the prospect of a princely sum that
\n ALPS President George Stagno Navarra should be officially
\n presenting on stage in the closing hours of the Lyceum Bicycle
\n Marathon 2007.<\/p>\n

ALPS paid for advertising in The Times, and with the willing
\n help of Bishop Annetto Depasquale distributed eyecatching
\n fliers to all parishes for putting up in their notice boards
\n in the days leading up to the marathon, urging the faithful
\n to visit The Lyceum with their families, enjoy the activities
\n and, more importantly, help with their donations, even through
\n SMS. The Association also paid for adverts in the church leaflet
\n Jum il-Mulej on the weekends of 10\/11th and 17\/18th March.<\/p>\n

Members and Friends of ALPS can make the Association\u2019s
\n final contribution even greater by selling and\/or buying more
\n lottery tickets (with proceeds exclusively to ALPS Secretary-General
\n Alex Borg at \u201cAlson\u201d, Naxxar Road, San Gwann)
\n and by donating top-quality items for sale at the Bazaar or
\n Plant Shop during the marathon. Please contact Membership

\n FOUNDATION DAY CONCERT WITH A DIFFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the busy run-up to the Lyceum Bicycle Marathon, part
\n of the ALPS Council of Administration has been working in
\n parallel on the organisation of a grand Foundation Day Concert
\n with a difference \u2013 one whose proceeds will be going
\n to another charity, in keeping with our social, civic and
\n philanthropic calling.<\/p>\n

Cultural Activities Commission Chairman Joe Fenech has been
\n working for months to put up a Concert Version of Franz Leh\u00e0r\u2019s
\n famous operetta La Danza delle Libellule. The show will be
\n held at the Salesians Hall in Sliema on 28th April with the
\n participation of soloists Karen Camilleri, Louiselle Pace
\n Gouder, Connie Frances Zerafa, Joseph Aquilina and Joe Huber,
\n all accompanied on the pianoforte by Cynthia Genovese. Also
\n taking part will be the Youth Orchestra of the Societ\u00e0
\n Filarmonica Sliema conducted by Mro James Bernard Agius, the
\n Choir of the University of the Third Age trained by Yolanda
\n Micallef, and CATS Dance Company with the choreography of
\n Mariosa Pavia. Monica Attard and John Dimech will be comp\u00e8res.<\/p>\n

Free parking will be made available at St Patrick\u2019s
\n Grounds. All proceeds from the show will go to the Salesian
\n Youth Centre, Sliema. Tickets at Lm2.50 can be booked from

With all the effort that is going into it, this year\u2019s
\n ALPS Foundation Day Concert should be a night to remember!<\/p>\n


\n CANADA, HERE WE COME \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the help of ALPS Canada Branch President, former Maltese
\n Consul Milo Vassallo, the long-cherished dream of President
\n George Stagno Navarra \u2013 the much-awaited ALPS Tour of
\n Canada \u2013 has finally been put together and set for 28th
\n August to 18th September, 2007. It promises to be so good
\n that places are being snapped up.<\/p>\n

The focal point of the tour will be a Grand Reunion between
\n Lyceum past students from Malta and Canada with a dinner at
\n the exclusive Toronto Club on 31st August: certainly a memorable
\n event for ALPS. The entire trip, painstakingly put together
\n through SMS Travel of Valletta, will include conducted tours
\n of Toronto, Lake Ontario, Niagara, Calgary, the Pacific Coast,
\n Vancouver, British Columbia, a five-day tour of the Rockies
\n and a seven-day cruise in Alaska on the m.v. Norwegian Sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe touring itself and the cruise are breathtaking
\n enough, but the greatest joy will be to meet and socialise
\n with former students of the doyen school of Malta who have
\n kept the Lyceum torch alight in Canada,\u201d said George
\n Stagno Navarra. \u201cWe are hoping that the publicity given
\n to the get-together will help to entice many more in Canada
\n to inject new blood into the branch.<\/p>\n

\u201cMilo Vassallo has been lovingly working on the details
\n of the trip almost ever since he retired, and he deserves
\n a lot of the credit for the whole trip coming to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n
