{"id":5631,"date":"2015-01-28T13:52:57","date_gmt":"2015-01-28T13:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alps.asmlt.com\/?page_id=5631"},"modified":"2015-01-28T15:18:26","modified_gmt":"2015-01-28T15:18:26","slug":"5631-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alpsmalta.com\/?page_id=5631","title":{"rendered":"JUNE 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>BICYCLE MARATHON NETS Lm12,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>                    It was a proud moment indeed when Mr Tony Caruana Smith, Headmaster<br \/>\n                    of the Dun Guzepp Zammit (Brighella) Junior Lyceum, presented<br \/>\n                    a cheque for Lm12,000 to Mgr Lawrence Gatt, Director of the<br \/>\n                    Dar tal-Providenza, as the proceeds from the Lyceum Bicycle<br \/>\n                    Marathon of last March. ALPS was represented at the occasion<br \/>\n                    by President George Stagno Navarra and Deputy President George<br \/>\n                    Grech, who with Council member Oscar Galea liaises between<br \/>\n                    the Association and the organising committee. <\/p>\n<p>                    In a speech Mr Caruana Smith thanked all those who participated<br \/>\n                    and helped in this year\u2019s event. Mgr Gatt in turn expressed<br \/>\n                    great satisfaction at the generous sum collected, which will<br \/>\n                    go towards the refurbishment of the main kitchen at the Providential<br \/>\n                    Homes. He then specifically turned towards our representatives<br \/>\n                    and thanked the Association of Lyceum Past Students for the<br \/>\n                    unprecedented efforts made this year to help the current Lyceum<br \/>\n                    students to collect such a handsome amount.<\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>Lm452 FROM FOUNDATION DAY CONCERT <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The proceeds from the Foundation Day Concert of 28th April<br \/>\n                    amounted to Lm452. A cheque was presented to Fr Joe Forte<br \/>\n                    by Association President George Stagno Navarra together with<br \/>\n                    Cultural Commission Chairman and concert producer Joe Fenech.<br \/>\n                    The proceeds went towards works carried out at the Salesian<br \/>\n                    Theatre. <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>SUB-COMMITTEE FOR ST ANNE\u2019S CHAPEL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>                    At a meeting of the ALPS Council of Administration on 23rd<br \/>\n                    May a new sub-committee was formed to take care of St Anne\u2019s<br \/>\n                    Chapel at Pwales Valley. The committee is headed by Dr Nazareno<br \/>\n                    Azzopardi with members Leopold Scicluna and Oscar Galea.<\/p>\n<p>All present thanked outgoing Chapel Commission Chairman Charles<br \/>\n                    Calleja and his wife Ther\u00e8se for the work they did<br \/>\n                    ever since the chapel was entrusted to ALPS.<\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>LYCEUM ARCHIVES RESTORATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ALPS has also set up an ad hoc committee to work with President<br \/>\n                    Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, himself a Lyceum past student,<br \/>\n                    on the restoration of the Lyceum Archives. The committee,<br \/>\n                    made up of ALPS Project Coordinator Leopold Scicluna, George<br \/>\n                    Grech and Robbie Ferrante, is also being assisted by Lyceum<br \/>\n                    historian Winston Zammit and Charles Micallef St John.<\/p>\n<p>The project has the full blessing of Education Minister Louis<br \/>\n                    Galea.<\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>ZURRIEQ CULTURAL TOUR GOES WELL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The socio-cultural tour of Zurrieq on 12th May, led by Mr<br \/>\n                    Tony Terribile, went very well, although it could have been<br \/>\n                    better attended. <\/p>\n<p>The tour took in St Catherine\u2019s Parish Church with<br \/>\n                    its valuable Mattia Preti paintings and other treasures; the<br \/>\n                    two band clubs, Santa Katerina and Madonna tal-Karmnu; and<br \/>\n                    the exteriors of the restored Xarolla Windmill, the Armoury<br \/>\n                    and the medieval Hal Millieri Chapel, which could not be accessed<br \/>\n                    because of the current restoration works. But the interesting<br \/>\n                    information given by Mr Terribile made up for the disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>The cultural part of the tour was followed by an enjoyable<br \/>\n                    light lunch at the Blue Cave Restaurant at Wied iz-Zurrieq.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>SPIRITUAL RETREAT ANOTHER SUCCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet another success was registered at the annual Spiritual<br \/>\n                    Retreat at Manresa House, Gozo, between 25th and 27th May.<br \/>\n                    Various talks were given by Fr Henry Formosa SJ, with the<br \/>\n                    able assistance of new Manresa House Director Fr Anthony Cilia<br \/>\n                    SJ. <\/p>\n<p>There was a very welcome development this year because instead<br \/>\n                    of mainly listening, as in previous years, the participants<br \/>\n                    engaged the speakers in some lively discussions on various<br \/>\n                    topics of the Church\u2019s teachings, including modern family<br \/>\n                    life.<\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>MNARJA B.B.Q.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Association of Lyceum Past Students is organising an<br \/>\n                    Mnarja BBQ on the terrace of the Coastline Hotel, Salina Bay,<br \/>\n                    on Thursday 28th June at 7.30 for 8 p.m. Bookings, with pre-payment<br \/>\n                    at Lm6.75 per person, may be made with ALPS Social Commission<br \/>\n                    Chairman Alfred G. Formosa on e-mail agf313@yahoo.co.uk, telephone<br \/>\n                    21 383486 or mobile 9924 6574; or Secretary-General Alex Borg<br \/>\n                    on 21 386812, mobile 9988 8579 or e-mail alps@global.net.mt.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>FEAST OF ST ANNE AT PWALES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Feast of St Anne is being held at the Pwales<br \/>\n                    Chapel on Saturday 14th July, with Mass at 7 p.m. by ALPS<br \/>\n                    Spiritual Director Fr William Bartolo OFM Conv.<br \/>\n                    Mass will be animated by the Choir of the University of the<br \/>\n                    Third Age, led by Mro Joe Fenech. After Mass the choir will<br \/>\n                    sing some popular classics. The evening will be brought to<br \/>\n                    a close with a light reception for all present.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>LYCEUM GRAND REUNION 2007<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The now-annual Lyceum Grand Reunion will be held on Saturday<br \/>\n                    20th October at the Dun Guzepp Zammit (Brighella) Lyceum,<br \/>\n                    Hamrun. All Lyceum past students are cordially invited to<br \/>\n                    attend with their spouses, but there will be a special emphasis<br \/>\n                    on all those who left or entered The Lyceum in 1957 \u2013<br \/>\n                    50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>This year we also have a special appeal from Mgr Lawrence<br \/>\n                    Gatt, Director of the Dar tal-Providenza in Siggiewi. He would<br \/>\n                    dearly like to meet as many as possible of his old schoolmates<br \/>\n                    who entered The Lyceum in 1947 \u2013 that makes it 60 years<br \/>\n                    on!<\/p>\n<p>Every person on the ALPS membership list, as well as those<br \/>\n                    who are not yet members but attended any of the Grand Reunions<br \/>\n                    since 2005, will be contacted with a view to starting to get<br \/>\n                    a picture of prospected attendance at this year\u2019s Grand<br \/>\n                    Reunion. Such feedback is very important for planning purposes.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>For more information please contact ALPS Membership Commission<br \/>\n                    Chairman Anthony Aquilina on 21 373706, 7937 3706 or alps@global.net.mt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34U CAMPAIGN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ALPS Secretary-General Alex Borg is still accepting promises<br \/>\n                    of support from members and friends for the collective ALPS<br \/>\n                    planting of trees in the 34U campaign, pencilled in for late<br \/>\n                    October. The Association may be accorded its own area, probably<br \/>\n                    at the Kennedy Grove, with a prominent sign to that effect,<br \/>\n                    and the permanent maintenance of the trees will be taken up<br \/>\n                    by the Government.<\/p>\n<p>The idea was born well before the cowardly, terrorist act<br \/>\n                    of destroying 3,000 young trees at Mellieha, but that event<br \/>\n                    alone should make more members and friends of ALPS and their<br \/>\n                    families even more determined to counter the attack with new<br \/>\n                    trees. Each person or family planting a tree for Lm6 will<br \/>\n                    be photographed for a certificate showing name, picture, date<br \/>\n                    and place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEMBERSHIP <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Membership fees of Lm5 for 2007, or Lm30 for life membership,<br \/>\n                    are payable to Treasurer David Abela at \u201cJuniper\u201d,<br \/>\n                    Triq Ganni Vella, Tal-Qattus, Birkirkara. <\/p>\n<p>We do need your fees to keep ALPS\u2019s financial ball<br \/>\n                    rolling.
