OCTOBER 2010

AUTUMN IS BACK…

Another season has started and we all return to our normal lifestyle after the summer vacation. Many would have had the opportunity to visit foreign countries during the summer months. Some others perhaps, would have preferred to hop on the ferry and cross over to the sister island of Gozo, for a tranquil and peaceful sojourn. For sure, they have brought with them some happy and unforgettable memories that may continue to enrich their knowledge in the coming years. You might have thought that The Association of Lyceum Past Students has taken a short break but rest assured, that whilst you were enjoying your summer holidays the council of administration never ceased from continuing with work behind the scenes. This of course, to silently prepare for you even newer events that will no doubt be to your liking dear members and friends. We are planning many new activities for the coming months. Everything needs a sound preparation thus ensuring a good presentation without any hitches. Nothing pleases us more than seeing good participation in all that is presented to you…Your continued support is our guarantee to a better future for A.L.P.S.

A.L.P.S. REUNION IN OCTOBER 2010.

As already reported to you in a previous newsletter, we are now getting closer to celebrating another 50th Anniversary by holding a REUNION inside the Lyceum Main Hall on the 23rd October 2010. Of course, the reunion is open to all members.
There will be Holy Mass at 19.00hrs. The A.L.P.S. choir will also be in attendance.

When Holy Mass is ended all present will remain seated for some more popular singing by the A.L.P.S. choir. Around 20.00hrs, a reception will start in the same Lyceum main hall to celebrate together this event. For catering arrangements we would appreciate receiving at the very earliest the attached form together with your contribution of €7.00 per head signifying your intention to attend for this activity. And, to further make this event more interesting, a special Pre-Opera evening is being organised at The Salesian Youth Centre in Sliema on the 28th October 2010 at 7.00PM. Joe will explain when & how La Traviata was written and first presented on stage. Musical excerpts will also accompany the narration.

DANCE TO HEALTH and stay fit all the time…

No doubt you must have heard by now that the Association of Lyceum Past Students have embarked on a latest project that has been code- named DANCE FOR HEALTH. On the initiative of council member PeterPaul Bonnici and with the blessing and backing from Council of Administration, we have managed to secure the services of a qualified dance tutor. Already four dance lessons have taken place. Apart from a few complaints concerning some aches and joint pains from wobbly knees mostly from terz’eta’ members, there has been a great amount of interest shown during each session. Of course, spontaneous bouts of laughter added to the fun of such new project. Lessons are being held on Saturday mornings each week between 09.30 & 10.30-hrs. The Lyceum headmaster Mr. Tony Caruana Smith very kindly acceded and granted permission to make the LICEO main hall available for such teachin.

There is still room for more participants and if you should decide to take the plunge, come and join the dance session. You are invited to communicate directly with Mr. PeterPaul Bonnici on tel: 7982 4250 / 2167 2684 or by e-mail:petpol@maltanet.net You will find it to be a therapy for mind and body besides getting you closer to other Lyceum Past Students Association members.

KEEP SENDING YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESSES PLEASE:

Our active council member Oscar Galea, is very happy with the continued response by A.L.P.S. members from Malta and from Overseas, who are favourably responding and sending in their e-mail addresses for updating the data base of our association. This may in the long run help us in no small way to start forwarding newsletters and other association announcements via the electronic mail system. No doubt, you will be assisting us to reduce on postage charges and therefore your continued support and co-operation is greatly appreciated. For those of you who have already obliged and sent in their e-mail addresses, I would like to say a big THANK YOU guys.

You are going to be the first members to receive from this very same month the A.L.P.S. News by e-mail. To all others who may have overlooked this request, I would like to appeal once again and say PLEASE PLEASE help us out and hit the send button to oaggalea@maltanet.net and forward your up-to-date correct e-mail address. This of course may enable you to also be receiving the A.L.P.S. NewsLetter and all fresh announcements even faster than before.

ANOTHER UP-DATE to FORTHCOMING ACTIVITIES AT PWALES CHAPEL:

On Saturday the 2nd October Fr. William Bartolo celebrated Holy Mass at The Chapel. A good number of members and Pwales neighbours have turned up for this occasion and it was nice to observe all benches full and even beyond.

Saturday the 6th Nov 2010 Holy Mass at 16.30hrs – This will be A.L.P.S.-REMEMBRANCE DAY

Monday the 13th Dec 2010 Holy Mass at 11.00hrs – The A.L.P.S. choir will sing Christmas carols in preparation for the Christmas-Festive Season

A LIBRARY OF BOOKS WRITTEN BY LICEO PAST STUDENTS;

We are so very pleased to announce that there has been a very positive response to the appeal for books that have been written / published by Lyceum Past Students. The number of books that are already in our hands increases in number every single day. It certainly looks like the library to contain them is going to be quite sizeable too. Honestly, we feel thrilled at such feed-back from you dear members of A.L.P.S. It is our intention to give even more chance to other LICEO past students who may have dragged their feet up to date, but they can still be interested in taking part in this latest initiative.. Continue to hand in your books via Secretary General Alex Borg: tel: 2137 6387 / 2138 6812 or mobile 9988 8512 or e-mail: alpsmalta@gmail.com / info@alps.com.mt

We shall be pleased to include your books to the already vast collection. We want be able to plan a block presentation to the Lyceum Headmaster some time in October or November this year. It is envisaged that prominence shall be given to the library/showcase that will house these books preferably inside the boardroom of the school. We are sure that the authors of such books will be giving back to The LICEO a merited gift in recognition for the fine teaching received from such a prestigious school. Do show your gratitude and participate in this initiative by handing over books and materials written by you.

COLLEAGUES OF OLD ON THE WEB-SITE OF A.L.P.S.

It has already been announced to you that the association would like to strengthen ties between Liceo Past Students. For this reason we have created a special section on our web-site entitled “Colleagues of Old”

Would members and friends of ALPS who think they might be able to contribute by sending in photos and or short auto biographies, help us out in this matter. Please write to PRO. Peter Tortell on petertortell47@gmail.com or tel: 2131 3224. Thank you for your cooperation. We Invite our members to continue to visit our web-site www.alpsmalta.com with the very latest updates where, in the’ Colleagues of old’ we recently included some memorable photos submitted by members and, on ‘download section’ photos of last year’s yuletide dinner that was very well attended to mark the 15th anniversary of A.L.P.S.

petertortell47@gmail.com

It goes without saying that the payment of your annual subscription is the sole livelihood of our association. A.L.P.S. has no income from any source and without collecting the yearly subscriptions from its members, we can not continue with the vast program of events. We know that many are punctual and pay-up their subscription on time Some perhaps, still do not realise well enough the heavy burden and the expenses that we have to face in order to maintain a very attractive web-site, post to you the regular newsletters and pay also for other announcements through the local media etc etc.

ALPS members are still in time to pay their subscription fees for 2010 and qualify to attend the Annual General Meeting in 2011. Fees are to be addressed to ALPS Treasurer David Abela at “Juniper”, Triq Ganni Vella, Tal-Qattus, Birkirkara.

Stay Young and Happy

Just never let your brain idle….Laugh often, long and loud…
Laugh until you gasp for breath. Laugh so much that you can be tracked in the store by your distinctive laughter.
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.
The tears happen…Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with you your entire life is yourself. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets, keepsakes,
Music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
Cherish your health…If it is good — preserve it.

If it is unstable — improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve — get help
Tell the people you love that you Love them, at every opportunity.
And remember that Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take…
but by the moments that Take our breath away!

V E R Y I M P O R T A N T THE A.L.P.S. STATUTE

THE PWALES CHAPEL – 10 YEARS IN THE HANDS OF A.L.P.S.

GREAT CELEBRATIONS TO COMMEMORATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY SINCE A.L.P.S. HAS TAKEN OVER THE PROJECT FOR THE complete RESTORATION OF THE OLD PWALES CHAPEL . WITH GREAT SATISFACTION WE now LOOK BACK ON THESE PAST TEN YEARS AND ADMIRE THE extensive WORKS THAT HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT ON
THIS JEWEL OF A CHAPEL.

Ten years ago, the Association of Lyceum Past Students signed an undertaking and accepted to take into its hands and to restore, preserve and look after a small chapel that is hidden in the quiet surroundings of The Pwales Valley (limits of St. Paul’s Bay).

It is situated in what one may term as one of the remaining and still unspoilt places in the islands of Malta & Gozo. Way out in the middle of a valley and
surrounded by many farms and fields, one comes face to face with a most beautiful old chapel dating back a few centuries.

What our forefathers had built and left for us to enjoy and partake of the beautiful architecture and design contained in the Pwales Chapel, must not at any time be left to go astray.

We are determined to see this mission accomplished and with the help of God and the intercession of the patron Sant’Anna, we feel confident that we shall continue to look after and keep alive a tradition that should give the greatest satisfaction to each one of the members in The Association of Lyceum Past Students.
